The volume of emails we receive in the parents’ account for Namine’s school is… daunting, to say the least. I know we’ve received emails in years past about Capitol Day, but for some reason it really caught my attention this year. Having received it a mere week before the event, Jessica had to scramble a bit in order to get off work, but we both made it.
We weren’t very clear on what it actually entailed. Based on the describing email, we were under the impression that we would be listening to speakers on the topic of virtual learning. That turned out to be half true.
The day did start out with us listening to some folks in charge of Parents for School Options. As the name implies, it’s an organization that advocates for learning options to best serve students. The focus of the day was to emphasize that virtual learning is just as important, and no less valid, as brick-and-mortar school attendance.
The surprise was that we — the families in attendance — would themselves be walking to the capitol building in order to speak to politicians, or at least to deliver letters. Had we known, I think we would have written our letters in advance. Namine, unable to attend because of the drive, could also have written a letter for us to deliver. (As it was, only one of the two responsible for our district was available for hand delivery.)
It is some kind of irony that we just got involved with Parents for School Options this year, Namine’s senior year of high school. But much with the same attitude that prompted us to start writing about Namine’s life, we’re sure that our experience can benefit others. If we can help shed light on the importance of virtual education to even one politician, then we have made a difference.
