Under the Sea Prom

Namine had a wonderful time at prom.

Prom at Namine’s school, Rural Virtual Academy, has a new theme each year. This year’s theme was “Under the Sea.” In the past, Namine has dressed in a theme-appropriate way, like when they attended prom during their freshman year. This year, however, they wanted to dress nicely. They chose a blue button-up shirt and white tie.

RVA dances are always quite inclusive. They’re considerate of students (and teachers, too) that need a break from the loud music by having a separate room with board games, multiple video game stations, and plenty else to keep people entertained.

Namine brought their Loop ear plugs, as they’ve done for past dances, but even so, some of the music got to be too much. They went into the entertainment room, where they played Guitar Hero with a teacher and another student. They did go back and dance after a while. When Jessica and I came to pick them up, they were not ready to go. Same as it ever was.

While Namine was at prom, Jessica and I started out our evening by checking into our hotel. The drive is too long to make at 11:00 at night, so we always book a hotel when we take Namine to a school dance. We always get the same hotel, and usually the same room, because we were so happy with the accessibility it offered.

Last time Namine had a dance, the hotel’s pool was closed. We still brought our swim suits (credit goes completely to Jessica for remembering), and it’s a good thing we did: the pool was open once again. With as busy as we are, we don’t often get the chance for a date — much less a swimming date. It was so nice!

After Jessica and I finished swimming, we picked up some dinner and headed back to the hotel. We brought our laptops along to get some work done, so we set up to do that. There was only one desk, so our arrangement was initially on opposite ends of the room: Jessica at the desk, and me on a couch cushion on the floor.

At Jessica’s suggestion, I inquired about an extra chair at the front desk. They delivered (though not literally, I carried it to the room), allowing us both to work on opposite sides of the desk.

The following morning, we checked out of the hotel. I brought a trolley to the room, and Namine helped by pushing it down the hallway and out the door.
