Planning a birthday

Jessica and I were compiling a list of children, with Namine’s help, to invite to Namine’s upcoming birthday party.

In making the list, the question of inviting a certain girl — who has been mean to Namine in the past — came up. Jessica and I were not inclined to invite her, taking recent past behavior into account, but Namine disagreed.

“I want to invite her,” she said, “because she is my best friend.”

“But she’s been mean to you.”

“I know, but she’s still my best friend.”

“Namine, what makes her a friend?”

“A friend is someone that even if they’re naughty or mean to you, they can still be your friend. Because even though she was mean to me, she’s still my friend, because I love her.”

Namine has seen her fair share of adversity — not just in the medical problems she’s seen, but in the lack of inclusion, whether accidental or deliberate. But through everything, she has such a loving heart.

But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.
