Jessica’s child care participated in the city’s trunk or treat. Last year they dressed as babies; this year they wanted to dress and characters from the television show, Bluey. Jessica asked me if I could paint Bluey and Bingo on a large cardboard box. I said I didn’t know, but I’d be willing to try!
I admit I was apprehensive about drawing them freehand, but then Jessica had the fantastic idea of using our projector to trace the images. In order to get the box high enough, I had to build a “house of cards”-esque structure using trays and one of Namine’s therapy benches. I made the initial drawings with pencil, then retraced the lines with a thick Sharpie marker once I’d put the box back on the floor.
Being colorblind, I needed help in picking out colors to match the characters. I brought Namine all our paint bottles — of which there were many, since we all love to paint — and they picked out the appropriate ones. (I could handle the primary colors, but aside from those I definitely felt out of my depth.)
I was very happy with how well the entire thing turned out. So were the staff of Jessica’s child care, as they placed it to one side of their trunk or treat table. I didn’t even know this at the time, but each organization participating in the trunk or treat was competing for a monetary prize — and my painting helped the child care win! (I don’t mind tooting my own horn here, toot toot.)
