Al’s Run t-shirt design

I’m happy to reveal our design for this year’s Al’s Run shirts!

With everything else that’s been going on, I almost forgot to do the design. We decided on what to do quite a while ago, but unlike past designs, it wasn’t something I could do by drawing freehand or by myself on the computer.

Namine wanted to do something superhero-ish. I suggested a picture of her holding Thor’s hammer Mjolnir (or Mew-Mew, if you prefer). She liked that, but there was just one problem: I can’t draw realistically, or realistically enough to pass for something out of a comic book.

I had the idea of taking a picture of Namine, which I would somehow turn into a comic book-like design. This was my prototype, crudely drawn in MS Paint. It got the point across well enough as I was explaining it to Jessica and Namine, who said, to paraphrase Captain Picard, “make it so!”

On a nice and sunny day, I took a picture of Namine holding up her tennis racket. I then printed out that picture and traced it on a light table. (No, I don’t own a light table. We took down a picture and used its glass and my phone’s flashlight to make our own.) I then scanned that drawing into the computer and filled in the shadowy bits to make the final product.

Well, almost final product. There was still the matter of lettering, but a quick search for “Avengers font” revealed a handy online generator. Input your text and get an image. What could be simpler?

I must say I’m pretty happy with the final product. I’ll never hack it as a comic book artist, but I think it’ll do.
