A murder mystery kind of day

We got together with some friends to celebrate a birthday. And what better way to celebrate than with murder mysteries?

Haunted Mansion escape room

First on our agenda was an escape room with a murder mystery theme. We tried a new-to-us escape room in Madison, called Escape In Time . We’ve tried several escape rooms, but this one had something we’d never seen before: an escape room before our escape room.

Upon entering Escape In Time, we found ourselves in what appeared to be a candy shop. A disembodied voice invited us to find the exit, which was not the obvious door that looked like a large bar of white chocolate.

After we found our exit (which I will not spoil here), we entered a futuristic-looking lobby where we completed our registration and awaited our admission into Haunted Mansion, our escape room of choice.

While we were waiting, Namine found a sign which read, “Unattended children will be given an espresso & an alien puppy.” Namine said to me, “You can have the espresso, I’ll take the alien puppy.”

The escape room was sufficiently creepy, I would say, but not scary. (Not even by Jessica’s standards, less so by my own.) That is, expect for one part which I also will not spoil.

We had an hour to solve all the puzzles and escape, which we did with four minutes to spare. We had a lot of fun!

The Dinner Detective

The second murder mystery on our agenda was The Dinner Detective , which was dinner and a show. Jessica and I had experienced one before, when we celebrated our anniversary a couple years ago. This time around, we experienced a different story but still equal amounts comedy and mystery.

One thing new to Jessica and myself was the challenge, put to everyone near the end of the show, to produce a sketch of the sketchiest person at each table. I can’t say I was completely surprised when I was picked, but at least I wasn’t wearing a hoodie.

Once again, Jessica and I were not disappointed in the whole experience. We’re glad that Namine and our friends were able to experience it as well, and we’re looking forward to such time that we can do it again.
