Apple cake with custard

A couple days ago, Jessica and I attempted a new dessert recipe. It did not turn out well.

We’ve made applesauce cake plenty of times, but to my recollection, we’d never made apple cake before. Jessica found this recipe online, so we thought we’d give it a try.

According to the recipe, the cake would be dense. It certainly was that, although it didn’t take 45 minutes to bake. Yeah, try an hour and a half. Even at that point, the middle was still a bit gooey. I’d had enough though, so I said screw it and took it out anyway.

But the custard is where things really took a wrong turn. I think I accidentally cooked the eggs while making the custard, resulting in a chunky, school cafeteria mystery food appearance. “Sauce”? More like “thick gravy.” Whatever, I still liked it.
