cleft palate

A near miss
Jessica took Namine to the ER this afternoon. She – Namine, I mean, not Jessica – was playing with a pencil in her mouth, despite being told not to. The next thing you know, Namine’s mouth is bleeding. And the cold grip of fear: did Namine puncture her palate?

The child who never was
I’ve seen quite a bit lately on Twitter about grieving your child’s special needs.

A long day of clinics
As I’ve mentioned before, long clinic-filled days are nothing new to us. Nothing new, no, but that shouldn’t suggest that we enjoy them.

Clinic tomorrow
As if last week was not bad enough with all its clinic visits, we have one more this week, midst all of Namine’s resumed therapy sessions. But while last week’s clinics were mere one- to two-hour deals, tomorrow’s is promised to be at least four hours long. A four-hour clinic visit is nothing new to…

Happy Mother’s Day
This post could easily be called “a look at our nearly three years of parenthood.” I know some moms who would not share this day with their husbands for their life, but thankfully Jessica is not like that. We both feel that we would not be as good separate. We would not be complete.

The pleasure of eating
I woke up this morning with a headache. Usually, that’s neither here nor there, because I always wake up with a headache. But it’s usually a small one, and it’s usually gone by mid-morning. But this one was a doozy, and it was because I had a nightmare. Nearly all of my nightmares have to…

By any other name
Today Jessica and I took Namine to her genetics appointment. It wasn’t so much for her benefit, however, as it was for ours, as her caregivers and advocates.

Preliminary IEP
This morning was Namine’s pre-IEP IEP. They called it the “preliminary IEP” – more like preliminary waste of time. We talked, we exchanged information, but no real decisions were made. We decided to make decisions, though. Does that count? After the meeting was said and done, nothing was committed. We signed a form or two,…

Difficulty speaking
Namine speaks in nearly all vowels. For whatever reason, she doesn’t make any plosive sounds. That is, B/D/P/T kind of sounds. She can make Ms, Ns (okay, with a little more difficulty), and Ls. But plosives, she can only seem to make when she plugs her nose. Speech therapy was concerned that it wasn’t just…

An apple a day
It’s been an almost immeasurably long time since Namine had last had an apple. It’s not that she doesn’t like them; far from it, she loves apples. But she couldn’t eat them, for fear of choking. The skin, especially, posed a problem. But before Namine’s cleft palate was repaired, she could not eat very much.…

Coincidence or providence?
Instead of doing one of those “year in review” posts, I’m going to talk about something else.

Appointments today
Namine had to get blood drawn and then pay a visit to the endocrine clinic today. I think it’s safe to say that she knows the hospital, and she thinks that it usually means pain. (I wonder where she got that idea.) I suspect she’ll sleep well at nap time.
