Tournament disappointment, again

Last year was Namine’s first basketball tournament, or at least it was supposed to be. Unfortunately, she didn’t get to play. She didn’t get to play this year either, but for an entirely different reason.

This past weekend was The Big Cheese. Namine had a good chance of getting to play this time, and she was so excited about it. And that’s about the time when something goes wrong.

I’m not superstitious, and I don’t believe that bad things are more likely to happen when things are going well. It was just plain bad luck (that’s just an expression, I don’t believe in luck either) that Namine came down with the stomach flu — or at least, some kind of stomach bug.

Namine and I were getting ready to leave. The cupcakes she and her aunt had made were all loaded into the car, I had my coat on, Namine had her coat on, and then she said to me, “I feel like I’m gonna barf.”

I grabbed a garbage can and sure enough, she threw up. (Here’s where it’s a good thing I’m not a sympathy barfer.) When she was done, I asked her if she was nervous about playing in the basketball tournament. She shook her head no, and threw up again.

As far as we can tell, Namine caught some kind of stomach bug. She was sick for pretty much the entire day. She was feeling much better by the following day, but even though The Big Cheese went on through the entire weekend, we stayed home, just in case.
