Cookie Day 2014

We were late for Cookie Day, to my eternal shame. Well, until about 10:00 in the morning.

I swear I set my alarm for early in the morning, but neither I nor Jessica heard it go off. She woke me up this morning asking what time it was, and my answer, I think, was “Blergh.” She shook me until I actually woke up, and my second answer was 8:35. Since we meant to leave at 8:30, we had to get a move on.

Sometimes Namine can really take her time getting ready in the morning, but it was Cookie Day — and not only that, an opportunity to see her cousin Olivia. She got ready a lot quicker than when she has therapy in the morning.

There wasn’t much to do for the girls until it was time to decorate the sugar cookies, so they played.

Olivia taught me and Namine (yes, I played with them because it was madness in the kitchen) how to play her Disney princess cupcake matching game — of which, mental note, I have to get for Namine now. It’s pretty cute, and I had fun.

Meanwhile, Jessica and her sisters were busy in the kitchen making cookies.

They made lemon cookies, peppermint cookies, peanut butter cookies, macaroons, banana bread, oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, oatmeal raisin cookies (the reason I have trust issues), rugelachs, and sugar cookies.

The most important part of the day, for Namine and Olivia, anyway, was when it came time to decorate the sugar cookies. Jessica, Ann, and Melissa had made three different colored frosting for the girls, and they also had an assortment of sprinkles.

When we packed up the cookie cutters, we just tossed the box into the trunk. Once I started going through the shapes for cutting up the sugar cookie dough (of which I did not eat very much, this year), I found some decidedly un-Christmas ones. Of course we had to make some.

I didn’t tell Namine what any of the shapes were, but some were easy — like the bats and pumpkins. I gave her a ghost cookie, but she took it and gave it her own creative spin.

Regrettably, we did not bring any Star Wars shapes — if I have any at all. Once upon a time, I know I had some Star Wars spatulas (though I don’t recall whether or not I still do), but on the matter of cookie cutters I cannot say. Regardless, I decided to try my hand — and knife — at cutting out a Millenium Falcon for Ann’s husband, Pete.

All in all, we had a fantastic time. Namine and Olivia were well-behaved (they have always played well together), if a little impatient for decorating cookies. At least they were not solely interested in eating their decorations this year! And wonder of wonders, we actually remembered to bring a rolling pin this year.

Making cookies with the kids = making great memories for the kids. Lisa from Quirks and Chaos

  3. It looks like everyone had so much fun! When my kids were little I used to make egg paint for hem to paint their Christmas cookies with along with all the other decorating stuff. My 19 yr old daughter still loves Hello Kitty (the one getting married this summer). She joked that she wants a Hello Kitty kitchen, so I got her a Hello Kitty pancake maker for Christmas. I’m sure my new son in law is going to love having Hello Kitty shaped pancakes for breakfast
