No boys allowed

Namine’s writing gets better every time I see it.

Namine has a birthday party to attend tomorrow, so we went out to Toys Я Us to pick a toy out. Namine’s friend has interests similar to her own — My Little Pony, drawing and coloring, cute animals, you get the idea — so she was able to do most of the choosing herself. Jessica and I only had to step in to cut Namine off. To coin a phrase, we ain’t made of money, you know. We had to tell her a few times that this is for your friend, not for you. Namine wanted to look at all the toys and put them in the cart.

We stopped at McDonald’s on the way home for a quick bite. We went through the drive-through, and as we ordered a Happy Meal for Namine, the bodiless voice over the intercom asked, “Boy or girl?”

Unthinking, the reply was, of course, “Girl.” The word “Barbie” appeared underneath the cheeseburger meal’s entry, and Namine said indignantly, “I don’t want a Barbie. I want a race car.” We made sure she got the race car.

After we got home, Namine ate her dinner quickly and then made a birthday card for her friend. She was looking forward to me joining her at the party, but it’s girls only. No boys allowed, including dads. Namine, being a Daddy’s girl, couldn’t imagine having a party and not having me there.
