Namine had an eye doctor appointment this morning. Going to the hospital is nothing outside of routine for us, and this was just your normal checkup.

As normal as possible for us, anyway. Having been born with Pierre Robin Sequence, Namine’s ears and eyes have always been of particular interest to the hospital. People who suffer from her condition have to strictly follow eye care tips for autumn and other additional precautions for every season. Many children with PRS are not only born with micrognathia (an undersized jaw) – PRS is a craniofacial disorder, and as such, it often impacts the eyes and ears as well.

Unlike ear checkups, the eye checkups usually go fine. Not today, though. Namine has been having a hard time adjusting to the palatal prosthetic, and simply having it in seems to wear her out. As a result, even though she’s doing better when it’s in, she’s just generally more tired. It definitely showed today. This morning she just burst into tears when I told her it was time to go to her eye appointment, even though she was fine with it last night. She cried through most the appointment itself. She calmed down a little later, so the doctor was able to gauge her eyesight.

By the numbers, Namine’s eyes seem to be about the same as they were last year. She seems to have difficulty focusing her eyes when she’s reading, however, so we have been given a prescription for Namine to get reading glasses. Were she less tired, I imagine she would be excited; she loves the idea of wearing glasses, and she’s asked me several times if she can get a pair of her own. As it is, she fell asleep in the car on the way home. Needless to say, we cancelled therapy for this afternoon.
