I’m all alone

The fourth of July weekend is over for me. I’m back at work today, but when I go home tonight, I won’t see my wife or daughter.

My weekend is over, but theirs is not. They’re still up at my aunt’s. In a rare occurrence, Namine doesn’t have any appointments or anything until Thursday, so Jessica decided to stay up there until tomorrow. I’m glad they have the chance to extend their vacation – especially with Namine’s ear surgery coming up on Friday – but I wish I could have stayed up there with them. It is lonely in the apartment without them.

When I wake up in the morning, I check on Namine. She rolls in her sleep more than a log down a hill, so I try to keep her covered and warm. Her legs and feet get cold so easily, and I want her to be comfortable. This morning, my alarm went off and I stumbled out of bed, my mind still numb with sleep. I walked into Namine’s room, as I always do, and went to make sure she was sleeping soundly. A hammer struck my heart as I realized she wasn’t there. (I learned later that she woke up at 7:30 this morning asking for me.)

By the time they get home tomorrow night, this will be the longest I’ve spent away from my wife and daughter. Jessica and I don’t subscribe to the mentality of “take a vacation from your spouse.” She and I are each other’s best friends, our closest confidants. We tell each other everything, and we share every joy and heartache. And even though Namine has spent days and nights in the hospital – long times, those – neither one of us has ever been apart from her for more than a day.
