Celebrating a healthy heart

Six months after completing the Fontan, Namine’s heart is doing phenomenally well.

Today was Namine’s six month follow-up appointment to the Fontan heart surgery. Can you believe it’s been six months already? We sure can’t.

The appointment today consisted first of an echocardiogram. This is, of course, old hat to Namine. She lay perfectly still while the tech did her job. (How I wish I could interpret the screen! Thankfully, Namine has a reliable and trustworthy cardiologist.) After the echo was done, we were taken to a room in the clinic to wait for the cardiologist to come and speak to us about the results.

I’m fairly certain they put us in the same room every time. It’s like our very own home away from home. At any rate, we definitely know the routine by now.

Namine’s cardiologist, Dr. Zangwill, came in after a short while. We’ve had our share of long waits, but today was not one of them. He had nothing but good news – not only was Namine’s heart healthy and doing exceedingly well, but he felt it was time to drop one of her medications. Normally, a patient would be weaned off a blood thinner like coumadin, but Namine is also on aspirin, so it can be stopped outright.

To make sure Namine was paying attention, tonight I asked her what medications she would get. She correctly answered all of her medicine, leaving out coumadin. I asked her, “Did you forget something?”

“Ummm… I don’t think so.”

“What about your coumadin? Don’t you need to take that, too?”

“No, silly! I don’t have to take that anymore.”

She’s a sharp one, that Namine.
